Nath, situated five kilometers east of Katmandu on the bank of Bagmati
river, the temple of Lord Shiva-Pashupati Nath with two tiered golden roof
and silver doors is famous for its superb architecture as well as an
important pilgrimage site for Hindus. Every year, thousands of devotees
visit here on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri Festival. Lord Shiva is known
as the destroyer and creator of the Hindu religion and appears on many
forms. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the main temple. For none Hindu,
visitors can clearly seen the temple and the activities performed in the
temple premises from the eastern bank of the Bagmati river Lord

According to a Hindu mythology, it is said that, the image of lord Shiva
in the form of Jyotirlinga was covered by earth over many years and soft
green grass sprouted over it. Every day a cow used to come over this spot
mysteriously and offer her milk to this holy but hidden Linga of Lord Shiva.
When the Gwala (owner of the cow) noticed that the cow stopped giving milk
for few days he started keeping eye on her and finally came across this
place. After then, he got very curious to know about why the cow was
offering her milk here, he dug this place and found the Jyotirlinga of Lord
Shiva.
After this number of gwalas gathered to worship this Linga according to
religious conformity, and started the tradition of worshipping this
Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. As the time passed Lord Pashupati Nath started
gaining more and more popularity and reverence of the devotees as a guardian
spirit and gradually the temple of Lord Pashupati Nath became a great place
of pilgrimage view of the temple complex from the other side of the Basmati
River. There are many Ghats on the bank of River Bagmati, which are
rectangular or round ones for ritual bat. There are many small houses behind
the Ghats; there are dying near the complex is almost a guarantee for
betterment in the next life. After the death ritual of cremation is started
immediately, all the ritual can be observed from the other side of the

The temple of Pashupatinath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated 5 Kms

the west there is a large meadow; to the south there are rice fields; and to
the north there is Kailash plateau, often said to have been the site of the
Licchavi capital, Mangriha.
One story about Pashupatinath temple is that one time Siva took the form of
a one-horned stag to avoid some obligations he had and then fled to here.
Various gods followed him and catching him here broke off his horn, which
became the Pashupatinath linga.
It is said that the linga was lost for a while, until he was found under a
spot where a cow was dropping her milk.

Benefits of Pashupatinath temple worship
By worshipping at Pashupatinath temple, wealth, grandeur and prosperity are
achieved physically and spiritually and it is said that if a childless

Pashupatinath with flowers, garlands, fruits, incense, akshata (whole rice

Every morning the west door of the sanctum is opened by the Bhandaris
(store-keepers) at 4 AM, from when worship of Pashupatinath begins. At half
past nine in the morning the other three doors of Pashupatinath temple are
also opened.
After bathing the lingum of Pashupatinath with holy waters, sacred worship
by Panchamrit Abhishek (consecration by ghee, milk, honey, sugar and curd)
is done by the priests.
Between 1 to 1:30 PM in the afternoon, the lingum of Pashupatinath is
elegantly dressed up in gorgeous costume, made of brocade and set with
tripunda (sandal paste mark) Chattras (umbrellas) are also placed on the
four heads.
On the top head of Pashupatinath , the graphic Shri Yantra is drawn with
sandal paste. Arti is performed then.
Later Bhog is offered to Pashupatinath. In the evening Arti of Pashupatinath
performed once again after dusk.
Special worships in Pashupati Nath temple are done on festivals i.e. full
moon day ( Purnamasi ) the Ekadasi (The eleventh day of the new and full
moon fortnights) and other auspicious days of the year.
The sandalwood for making the sandal paste for Shri Yantra is brought from
Mysore in India.
It has been a tradition of Pashupati Nath temple to appoint a priest from
south of vindhyachala in India who can worship Pashupatnath.
